Dispatch from D.C.
A report from Adrienne Maree Brown on the Actions of the September 24th Weekend

I am finally at a web connection after a powerful night and powerful morning. As you may know, I am not a fan of marches in general, because they don't turn out people of color in large numbers and often there is not a clear sense of accountability associated with the use of people's time.... Folks,

When Kanye West said George Bush doesn't care about Black people, he told the truth. You don't let people you "care about" linger on roof-tops for days without a drop of water or scrap of food while you attend fund-raisers. And you don't leave 20,000 people you "care about" stuffed in a sweltering stadium for nearly a week. If a hurricane hit Martha's Vineyard or Kennebunkport, you can bet Bush would have been there the next day.

Hurricane Katrina is not just a tragedy, it is a teachable moment on the devastating human consequences of the radical right's anti-government agenda. Grover Norquist (his real name :) is one of the most powerful right-wing strategists in DC. He holds infamous "Wednesday Morning Meetings" with the 100 biggest right-wingers every week. We decided to join them to unveil this billboard in his honor. It will follow Grover around all week... home to office, office to home. Much love to Andrew Boyd and Working Assets, with help from Malia Lazu, United States Student Association, United for A Fair Economy, and everyone who pulled this together so fast!

The Republican Congress has gone crazy! They are considering the biggest higher education cuts in history --$9 Billion dollars in student loan money, along with $10 Billion in Medicaid and cuts to Food Stamps and Veteran's Benefits. This would add about a $6,000 debt burden to every graduating college student who receives student loans and financial aid --it's a big giveaway to the loan industry.

Our ally The United States Student Association (USSA) has created an Action Kit to fight this. The vote is going to be squeaky close in the House and Senate. The League has joined a coalition to fight against it. They've planned call-in and rally days on Septeber 20. All we have to do is show up and participate. The last vote like this (over Bush's budget cuts) was decided by only three votes --and close to ten Congresspeople didn't even bother to show up! Republicans know they are vulnerable on this issue. If we apply pressure, we can win!

Marisa Garcia, victim of the HEA Drug Provision
Repeal the Drug Provisions of the Higher Education Act

Since 2000, more than 140,000 students with drug convictions have been blocked access to federal financial aid as a result of a little known provision of the Higher Education Act (HEA). The government should be trying to make it easier for students who've made mistakes in the past to get on the right track, not harder.

In 1998 the Drug Provision was slipped into the 257-page HEA reauthorization bill without debate or a recorded vote. Now, as Congress turns its attention to this legislation once again, there is an opportunity to scrap the Drug Provision once and for all.

Our compas at Students for a Sensible Drug Policy are running a campaign to repeal the Drug Provision. Click here to tell your representatives what's up.

A Letter from the Director

Rest. Reflect. Rejuvenate. Build Relationships. Fight Smart. Dream Big.

Thank you for stopping by to visit. People told us that after the election was over, everyone would disappear. No one has disappeared yet.

We haven’t even flinched.

We might need to change our name to The League of EXTREMELY Pissed Off Voters.

But yes. We’re here. For the long term...

...So sign up for the email blasts, become a member, donate, request a training, connect with a local group or event. Get your people together. Wherever you are. Eat, drink, dance, dream up a plan and connect it with the League. That’s how we grow.

~ Billy "Upski" Wimsatt
